Phule Movie Review: A Poignant Tribute to Social Reformers

A Love Story For India’s Progress
Director Ananth Narayan Mahadevan’s ‘Phule’ is a moving biographical drama about Jyotirao Phule (Jyotiba) and Savitribai Phule, two pioneering social reformers who dedicated their lives to improving India. The film, starring Pratik Gandhi and Patralekhaa, takes us back to 19th century India, a time of social and political upheaval. We see Jyotiba and Savitribai’s passion for education, their fight against caste discrimination, and their unwavering commitment to social justice.
The story begins in 1897 with Savitribai bravely tending to a sick child during a plague outbreak. We then flash back to 1848, where we see young Jyotiba teaching English to his wife Savitri, defying societal norms. Their journey takes them through numerous challenges, from facing opposition from the upper caste to establishing schools for girls at a time when it was unheard of. They even founded the Satyashodhak Samaj, an organization dedicated to uplifting the lower castes and fighting against social injustice.
The film beautifully captures the couple’s struggles, their triumphs, and their unwavering love for each other. Pratik Gandhi’s portrayal of Jyotiba is both powerful and inspiring, while Patralekhaa shines as the courageous and compassionate Savitribai. The supporting cast is equally impressive, bringing the characters and their world to life.
‘Phule’ is a must-watch for anyone interested in Indian history, social reform, or simply a powerful love story. It’s a reminder of the importance of fighting for what’s right, even when faced with overwhelming odds.
The Bottom Line
Mahadevan’s direction is strong, and the film’s cinematography is stunning. While the pacing could be tighter in the second half, the performances are truly exceptional. ‘Phule’ is a moving tribute to two extraordinary individuals who changed India forever. It’s a film that will stay with you long after the credits roll.
