The director of an upcoming Bollywood film based on Operation Sindoor, Uttam Maheshwari, has issued an apology following a wave of criticism for announcing the project amidst heightened tensions between India and Pakistan.

Taking to Instagram on Saturday, Maheshwari stated that his intention was never to exploit the situation for fame or financial gain. He expressed his deep admiration for the courage, sacrifice, and strength of Indian soldiers and leaders, emphasizing that the film was born out of respect for the nation. However, he acknowledged that the timing and sensitivity surrounding the announcement may have caused discomfort or pain to some.

Why the Backlash?

The film, titled ‘Operation Sindoor,’ is based on India’s counter-terrorism operation in Pakistan in May, a direct response to a deadly attack in Pahalgam. The poster, featuring a female soldier applying sindoor while holding a rifle amidst explosions and fighter jets, sparked outrage online.

“Stop embarrassing yourself and your country.”

Many criticized the filmmakers for capitalizing on a sensitive and ongoing conflict, with some accusing them of disrespecting the sacrifices made by soldiers. Others questioned the timing and the portrayal of a complex military operation in a film.

Maheshwari’s Response

In his apology, Maheshwari reiterated his admiration for the armed forces and expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He concluded his statement with a patriotic message, “Jai Hind! Jai Bharat!”

The controversy highlights the delicate balance filmmakers face when tackling sensitive topics, especially those related to national security and international relations.
