Big Business Boosts Legal Welfare: Sibal Secures Rs 50 Crore for Supreme Court Lawyers’ Health Insurance

A Generous Gesture for the Legal Fraternity
Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, a prominent figure in the legal world, has made headlines for securing a remarkable Rs 50 crore from prominent industrialists to fund a group medical insurance policy for members of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA). This initiative has sparked both praise and debate within the legal community.
A Controversial Decision
While Sibal’s efforts have been lauded for their ambition and potential to benefit lawyers, they have also faced criticism from some within the SCBA. Vikas Singh, the newly elected president of the Bar body, expressed concerns about the cost of the policy and its eligibility criteria. He believes the premium for a Rs 2 lakh cover is disproportionately high compared to a Rs 5 lakh cover and advocates for a more targeted approach, ensuring the policy primarily benefits needy and senior lawyers.
Addressing Conflict of Interest Concerns
Questions have also been raised about potential conflicts of interest, given that Sibal has represented some of the very industrialists who contributed to the fund. However, Sibal maintains that there is no conflict as the donations are made to the association itself and not to individual members. He emphasizes that his professional relationships with these companies are separate from his role in the SCBA and that he charges them for his legal services.
A Stellar Lineup of Donors
Sibal has detailed the process of raising the funds, revealing a remarkable list of contributors. These include Mukesh Ambani (Reliance Industries) who donated Rs 10 crore, and Anil Ambani (Reliance Group), Gautam Adani (Adani Group), N Chandrasekharan (Tata Sons), Samir Mehta (Torrent Group), G M Rao (GMR Group), Kumar Mangalam Birla (Aditya Birla Group), Anil Aggarwal (Vedanta) and Lakshmi Mittal (ArcelorMittal) each contributing Rs 5 crore. He explained that these contributions would be eligible for tax exemption under Section 80G of the Income Tax Act.
A Vital Support System for the Legal Community
Chief Justice of India B R Gavai, addressing an event organized by the SCBA, commended the association for its remarkable achievement, recognizing the initiative as a reflection of deep concern for the welfare of the legal community. He emphasized the vital role that health insurance plays in providing financial security and peace of mind for lawyers, particularly young ones who often face financial uncertainties.
The initiative by Kapil Sibal has undeniably sparked a conversation about the welfare of lawyers in India and the significant role that corporate philanthropy can play in supporting such endeavors.
