A Grand Cinematic Tribute
The official motion poster, shared on Riteish’s Instagram, offers a glimpse into the film’s ambitious scope and vision. Jio Studios and Mumbai Film Company have announced a worldwide release for ‘Raja Shivaji’, set to premiere on Maharashtra Day, May 1, 2026.
A Stellar Ensemble Cast

Chronicling a Legendary Life
As per Variety, ‘Raja Shivaji’ chronicles the inspiring rise of young Shivaji Bhonsale, the founder of the Maratha kingdom who defied the dominant empires of his time.
The film explores how Shivaji, born in 1630, established the principles of Swarajya, or self-rule, during a turbulent period in Indian history. He rose to become a fearless leader and brilliant strategist, establishing his dominion while Muslim rulers held sway over a significant portion of India. Hindu communities rallied behind him in his defiance of the oppressive Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.
Shivaji was later crowned Chhatrapati, a title that continues to symbolize Hindu bravery and pride, especially in the context of India’s independence movement.
Riteish’s Heartfelt Message
Accompanying the motion poster, Riteish shared a heartfelt caption: “Presenting cinematic tribute to Maharashtra’s adorable deity, great mighty Rajadhiraj Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj… #राजाशिवाजी May 1, 2026! Jio Studios and Mumbai Film Company are coming together for this grand epic story!”
A Pan-Indian Project
Produced by Jyoti Deshpande and Genelia Deshmukh, ‘Raja Shivaji’ features music by the renowned Ajay-Atul and cinematography by Santosh Sivan. To ensure a broader reach, the film will be released in six languages: Marathi, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam.
Speaking to Variety, Riteish emphasized the profound significance of the project: “Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is not just a historical figure — he is an emotion that lives in the hearts of millions. To be able to tell a part of his extraordinary story is both an honour and a great responsibility.”
