Trump’s iPhone Tariff Threat Faces Potential Lawsuit From California
Former President Donald Trump’s threat to impose a 25% tariff on iPhones made in India could land him in hot water. California Attorney General Rob Bonta has warned that he’s prepared to sue if Trump follows through on his threat.
A Clash Over Manufacturing Location
The controversy stems from Trump’s recent assertion that he told Apple CEO Tim Cook to manufacture iPhones exclusively in the US or face a hefty 25% tariff on iPhones assembled anywhere in the world, including India. This comes amidst rising trade tensions and Trump’s history of imposing reciprocal tariffs.
Apple had initially planned to sell all India-made iPhones in the US, but Trump’s demand that they shift production away from India has sparked controversy.
California AG Takes a Stand
California Attorney General Rob Bonta stated that his office is closely monitoring the situation and will defend the rights of California companies, even from the President of the United States.
In a statement to Politico, Bonta said, “We will be monitoring what he does, if he does anything, and we’ll make sure that if the law is broken and we have standing to sue, we’ll take appropriate action.”
Bonta further criticized Trump’s approach, saying it seemed impulsive and inconsistent:
“The statement about Apple is something that is obviously disappointing…It’s almost like he wakes up in the morning and he says, ‘Hey, I think Apple should build more Apple phones, and so maybe I’ll tell their CEO that he should do that.’ And then maybe tomorrow, he wakes up and he says, ‘Hey, I was just kidding.’”
Protecting California’s Economic Powerhouse
Bonta, known for his past actions against Big Tech companies regarding privacy and anti-monopoly issues, defended Apple, highlighting its role in California’s economic success. He stated that companies like Apple are vital to California’s position as the fourth-largest economy in the world and that he wants to ensure they can continue to create jobs and innovative products.
