Google’s AI is Now Your Scam Shield

Google is stepping up its fight against online scams with a powerful new weapon: artificial intelligence. The tech giant announced this week that it’s rolling out AI-powered protections across its Chrome browser, Search engine, and Android operating system.

On-Device Protection for Chrome

The star of the show is Gemini Nano, Google’s own on-device large language model (LLM). Think of it as a tiny AI brain living on your computer or phone. Gemini Nano is being integrated into Chrome 137 on desktops to enhance Safe Browsing, Google’s built-in system for identifying dangerous websites.

How does it work? Gemini Nano analyzes web pages in real-time, looking for telltale signs of scams. These could be anything from suspicious code to the use of language commonly found in phishing attempts. By running this analysis directly on your device, Google can provide instant protection, even against brand new scams that haven’t been seen before.

Taking Down Tech Support Scams

Google has already put Gemini Nano to work against a particularly nasty type of scam: remote tech support scams. These scams trick people into believing their computer has a problem and then pressure them to share personal or financial information. Gemini Nano can identify these scams by spotting specific clues on the web page, such as the use of the keyboard lock API.

Expanding to New Threats

Google plans to use Gemini Nano to detect even more types of scams in the future, including those related to package tracking and unpaid tolls. The feature will also be coming to Chrome on Android later this year.

AI-Powered Search Enhancement

In addition to on-device protection, Google is also boosting its AI-powered scam detection systems across its entire search engine. The company says these enhancements can identify 20 times more deceptive pages, and they’ve already had a big impact: reducing schemes impersonating airline customer service providers by over 80% and those mimicking official resources like visas and government services by over 70% in 2024.

Android Notifications on High Alert

And for Android users, there’s a new warning feature that’s designed to protect you from malicious notifications. This feature uses an on-device machine learning model to flag notifications from suspicious websites that might try to trick you into downloading harmful software or giving away sensitive data.

Staying Ahead of the Game

These new AI-powered protections are part of Google’s ongoing effort to keep users safe online. The company has been rolling out similar features in its Messages app and making progress in detecting scam calls. With these latest updates, Google is demonstrating its commitment to using technology to fight back against the ever-evolving world of online scams.
