Google DeepMind’s Senior Director, Manish Gupta, believes artificial intelligence (AI) has the power to supercharge creativity in India. He’s especially excited about Google Gemini, a new AI tool that he thinks can help Indians overcome productivity hurdles and unleash their potential.

Gupta’s optimism stems from a recent Kantar study that found a majority of Indians want to use AI to boost productivity, enhance creativity, and improve communication.

However, there’s still a gap in awareness. The study found that 60% of Indians aren’t familiar with what AI is or what it can do, and only 31% have tried a generative AI tool (GenAI).

To bridge this gap, Google is focusing on making AI accessible in local languages. Gupta explained that a lot of valuable information is locked away in languages other than English. Gemini can help unlock this information by understanding and answering questions in various languages, even when the relevant data is in a different language.

He also highlighted DeepMind’s efforts to improve AI’s ability to understand and respond to questions in different languages. “Humans do that very easily,” he said, “but AI models often struggle because they’re stuck in their capabilities across languages.”

Google is also taking steps to combat the spread of synthetic content. With SynthID, they’re partnering with Nvidia to embed a unique signature in all AI-generated content, making it easier to distinguish from human-created content.

Shekhar Khosla, vice president of Marketing at Google India, shared real-life examples of how Gemini is already making a difference. He talked about a retired employee who uses Gemini to file his income tax returns and another person who uses it to learn how to use their new DSLR camera.

Khosla believes Gemini is empowering people to do everyday tasks better, boosting productivity, and building confidence.
