Ricky Ponting, Shreyas Iyer Transform Punjab Kings Culture, Securing Playoff Spot

Punjab Kings Roar Back to the Playoffs
The Punjab Kings are back in the Indian Premier League (IPL) playoffs for the first time since 2014! Led by captain Shreyas Iyer, they secured their spot with a dominant seven-wicket victory against the Mumbai Indians on Monday. The thrilling win sets them up for a clash against either the Royal Challengers Bangalore or the Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 1 on May 29th at their home ground in Mullanpur.
A Culture of Respect
Shashank Singh, a key player for the Kings, credits the team’s success to the positive culture fostered by Iyer and head coach Ricky Ponting. Singh shared a heartwarming anecdote from the team’s first day together, where Ponting and Iyer made it clear they would treat everyone, from star spinner Yuzvendra Chahal to the team bus driver, with the same respect.
“Day 1, Ricky Ponting and Shreyas both told us… they will treat Yuzvendra Chahal, maybe the most senior player, and our bus driver the same. I mean, this is something and they have maintained this,” Singh explained.
Ponting’s Impact
Singh also highlighted Ponting’s significant role in transforming the team’s mindset and instilling a belief in their abilities.
“He has changed the team culture. He has changed our mindset. He has changed our beliefs. So, all those things, the credit has to be to him. Because, obviously, he is the one who changed our perspective towards the game. Culture, what I said. Caring about each other. Respecting each other. I mean, it’s very easy to say all these things… But again, building it is a different thing. So, he made sure that he built the culture within the dressing room,” Singh said.
Iyer’s Leadership
Shreyas Iyer, meanwhile, is making history as the first captain to lead three different teams into the IPL playoffs. After guiding Delhi Capitals to the final in 2020 and Kolkata Knight Riders to victory in 2024, he has now led Punjab Kings back to the big stage.
Singh praised Iyer’s leadership, stating, “Shreyas is a very dear friend. I have known him for the past 10-15 years. But playing under him, he being the captain, it was the best thing that has happened to me, to be very honest. The way he gives freedom to everyone, not only me but to everyone in the team.”
Looking Ahead
Chahal, a key bowler for Punjab Kings, missed the last two league matches due to a finger injury but is expected to be back in time for Qualifier 1. With their momentum building and a strong team spirit, the Punjab Kings are poised to make a deep run in the playoffs.
