SC Questions Rajasthan’s Response to Kota Student Suicides
The Supreme Court launched a scathing critique of the Rajasthan government on Friday, demanding answers about the alarming surge in student suicides at Kota’s renowned coaching centers. The court, presided over by Justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan, expressed deep concern over the situation, emphasizing the gravity of the issue.
‘Why Are These Children Dying Only in Kota?’
Justice Pardiwala directly challenged the state government, asking, ‘What are you doing as a state? Why are these children dying by suicide and only in Kota? Have you not given a thought as a state?’ The court’s sharp questioning stemmed from reports of 14 student suicides in Kota this year alone.
SIT Formed, But Court Demands Action
The Rajasthan government’s counsel informed the court that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) had been established to probe the suicides. However, the court remained unconvinced, pointing out a four-day delay in registering an FIR in the case of a 22-year-old IIT Kharagpur student who died by suicide in his hostel room.
Contempt of Court Alleged
The bench expressed its displeasure at the delayed action, stating, ‘Don’t take these things lightly. These are very serious things.’ The court even hinted at contempt of court proceedings against the police officer in charge, highlighting the seriousness of their non-compliance with the court’s earlier direction to prioritize student mental health concerns.
Kota Case Raises Further Concerns
In the Kota case, involving a NEET aspirant who died by suicide, the court criticized the lack of an FIR. The bench reminded the state counsel that the court-constituted task force would take time to present a comprehensive report, emphasizing the immediate need for action.
Police Officer Summoned
The court has now summoned the concerned police officer from Kota to appear before it on July 14 to explain the failure to register an FIR and initiate an investigation promptly. The court underscored the urgency of addressing this issue, demanding accountability and swift action from the authorities.
