YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra’s Pakistan Diary Sparks Controversy

YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra, who is currently facing investigation by India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) for alleged links with Pakistani Intelligence Operatives (PIOs), has come under scrutiny after a diary entry detailing her 10-day trip to Pakistan went viral. Malhotra, known for her travel channel ‘Travel with Jo,’ was arrested under charges of espionage and leaking sensitive information, specifically during Operation Sindoor following the Pahalgam terror attack.

Diary Entries Paint a Picture of ‘Crazy and Colourful’ Pakistan

The undated diary entry, spanning around 10-11 pages, includes eight pages of general travel notes in English and three pages in Hindi focused on Pakistan. In one entry, Malhotra describes her experience: ‘After completing this 10-day journey in Pakistan, I have now returned home — to my country, India. During this time, I received a lot of love from the people of Pakistan. Our subscribers and friends also came to meet us. The two days we got to explore Lahore felt too short.’

She continues, reflecting on the emotional ties despite the political divide: ‘Who knows how long these distances created by borders will remain, but the emotional grievances in our hearts should be resolved. We are all from the same land, the same soil.’ Malhotra even penned a request to the Pakistani government, urging them to facilitate religious tourism for Hindus and help reconnect families separated during the 1947 partition.

The entry concludes with a somewhat contradictory statement praising Pakistan: ‘No matter how much one says about Pakistan, it’s never enough. Crazy and colourful.’

More Than Just a Travel Log

The diary entry, written in a vlog-like style, offers a glimpse into Malhotra’s mindset during her trip. It also raises questions about her intentions and the nature of her interactions with individuals in Pakistan.

The Espionage Accusations

Malhotra’s case is part of a larger investigation into a suspected Pakistan-linked spy network operating in northern India. Authorities allege that Pakistani Intelligence Operatives (PIOs) recruited social media influencers to gather and leak sensitive information.

Investigators are scrutinizing Malhotra’s financial transactions and international travel history, finding discrepancies between her declared income and her frequent trips, including visits to Pakistan and China. Her laptop is undergoing forensic analysis to uncover potential collaborators and the extent of her alleged activities.

A crucial lead in this case is Malhotra’s connection to Ehsan-ur-Rahim alias Danish, a Pakistani official who was posted at the Pakistan High Commission in Delhi. Police believe their initial interaction in 2023, when Malhotra visited the High Commission for a visa application, led to further contact with Pakistani intelligence handlers.

Danish was expelled from India on May 13 for allegedly engaging in activities incompatible with his diplomatic status. Malhotra’s association with him has fueled suspicions about her involvement in espionage activities.

Beyond the Diary

This case highlights the growing concern over the potential for exploitation of social media platforms for espionage and the blurring lines between personal travel and national security.
