India’s Next Test Captain: Is It KL Rahul or Someone Else?

India Seeks a New Test Captain After Rohit Sharma’s Retirement
The Indian cricket team is on the hunt for a new Test captain after Rohit Sharma recently stepped down. Two popular names in the running are veteran pacer Jasprit Bumrah and young batsman Shubman Gill. However, former India coach Sanjay Bangar believes Bumrah might not get the nod due to the criteria set by the BCCI when appointing Suryakumar Yadav as the T20I captain.
Fitness Concerns and Playing XI Guarantee
Bangar points out that when Suryakumar Yadav was named T20I captain, the BCCI prioritized a player guaranteed a spot in the playing XI due to Hardik Pandya’s fitness issues. Applying a similar yardstick to the Test captaincy, Bumrah might miss out as his availability could be a concern.
Ajit Agarkar’s Reasoning and KL Rahul’s Credentials
This aligns with the reasoning given by BCCI Chairman of Selectors Ajit Agarkar when he chose not to make Hardik Pandya the T20I captain, citing fitness concerns. Bangar suggests that KL Rahul, a proven Test batsman with a consistent track record, might be a better fit for the captaincy role.
Rahul’s Age and Experience
Bangar emphasizes Rahul’s ability to perform in all conditions, his consistent scoring, and his young age (31 or 32) as reasons why he’d be a suitable captain for India over the next two-year World Test Championship cycle.
Shubman Gill: A Long-Term Prospect
While acknowledging Gill’s potential, Bangar believes it might be too early to appoint him as captain and recommends focusing on Rahul’s experience for the immediate future.
