In a setback for India’s space program, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) couldn’t successfully launch its EOS-09 Earth observation satellite on Sunday morning. The mission, intended to be the 101st launch from Sriharikota, encountered an anomaly in the rocket’s third stage, preventing the satellite from reaching its intended orbit.

Third Stage Issues

According to ISRO Chairman V Narayanan, the first two stages of the PSLV-C61 rocket performed as expected. However, during the third stage operation, an unexpected observation was detected, leading to the mission’s failure.

“Today we targeted the 101st launch from Sriharikota, the PSLVC61 EOS-09 mission. The PSLV is a four-stage vehicle and up to the second stage, the performance was normal. The third stage motor started perfectly but during the functioning of the third stage, we are seeing an observation and the mission could not be accomplished,” Narayanan stated.

ISRO is currently analyzing the entire mission performance to understand the cause of the anomaly.

EOS-09: A Crucial Earth Observation Mission

The EOS-09 satellite, designed as a repeat of the successful EOS-04 launched in 2022, was meant to provide vital remote sensing data for various applications. Its Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) payload, capable of imaging the Earth under all weather conditions day and night, would have been invaluable for:

  • Agriculture and Forestry Monitoring: Tracking crop health, identifying areas affected by disease or pests, and monitoring deforestation.
  • Disaster Management: Assessing damage from natural disasters like floods, earthquakes, and cyclones.
  • Urban Planning: Monitoring urban growth, identifying infrastructure needs, and managing resources.
  • National Security: Providing intelligence gathering capabilities and monitoring border security.

Looking Ahead

While the failure of the EOS-09 mission is undoubtedly a disappointment, ISRO has a history of persevering through setbacks and learning from them. The organization is expected to issue a detailed report on the findings of its investigation, paving the way for future missions and advancements in India’s space program.
