New Delhi – India and Pakistan have called off planned Director General of Military Operations (DGMO)-level talks for today, May 18th, the Indian Army confirmed. However, the ceasefire agreement reached between the two nations on May 12th remains in effect.

The Indian Army stated that there is no set expiry date for the ceasefire. This comes after the two countries engaged in intense cross-border exchanges earlier this month following a deadly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, which killed 26 people.

In response to the attack, India launched ‘Operation Sindoor’, targeting nine terror sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Context of the Ceasefire

The last DGMO-level talks took place on May 12th to solidify the ceasefire understanding reached on May 10th. This agreement was prompted by a call from the Pakistani DGMO to his Indian counterpart, Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai, to cease all firing and military activity along the border and Line of Control.

Previous Violations

Despite the truce agreement, the Pakistan army allegedly violated it hours later at multiple locations in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and Rajasthan. The Indian Armed Forces responded effectively and issued a stern warning to Pakistan against any further ceasefire violations.

Understanding the DGMO Role

The Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) is a senior army official responsible for overseeing military planning and border operations. Their role is crucial in maintaining communication and managing tensions between neighboring countries.
