Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Punjab has made a significant decision, suspending all agreements with institutions in Turkey and Azerbaijan. Citing recent geopolitical developments as being against India’s national interest, the university has taken immediate action to end various collaborations with these countries.

This includes the termination of student and faculty exchange programs, joint research projects, dual degree initiatives, and all other academic partnerships.
Announcing the decision, Dr. Ashok Kumar Mittal, the university’s founder chancellor, emphasized the importance of national security. He stated, “When our brave armed forces are risking their lives—whether in covert operations, air defence, or patrolling our borders—we, as an institution, cannot remain indifferent.”

Dr. Mittal further explained, “LPU’s mission has always been aligned with the growth and integrity of India, and we will never associate with any institution that undermines India’s sovereignty.”

He highlighted that while diplomacy is the responsibility of governments, universities also have a role to play in safeguarding national security. “National security extends beyond borders and must be considered in classrooms, boardrooms, and international partnerships,” he stressed.

LPU’s move follows growing tensions between India and Pakistan, with Turkey and Azerbaijan supporting Pakistan.

Other Universities Follow Suit

LPU isn’t alone in taking this action. Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) recently suspended its Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Inonu University in Turkey, citing national security concerns. A statement from JNU on X (formerly Twitter) said, “Due to national security considerations, the MoU between JNU and Inonu University, Turkey stands suspended until further notice. JNU stands with the Nation.”

Jamia Millia Islamia has also suspended all MoUs with Turkish educational institutions. Professor Saima Saeed, PRO of Jamia Millia Islamia, told ANI, “We have suspended all MoUs with institutions affiliated with Turkey. Jamia stands with the nation and the Government of India.”
