Chidambaram Questions INDIA Bloc’s Future

Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram has cast doubt on the cohesion of the INDIA bloc, the opposition alliance formed to challenge the ruling BJP in the upcoming general elections. Speaking at a book launch event on Thursday, Chidambaram expressed concern that the alliance appears ‘frayed’ and questioned its ability to stay united.

Chidambaram, while acknowledging the efforts of the INDIA bloc, stated, ‘The future (of INDIA bloc) is not so bright.’ He added, ‘It shows at the seams that it is frayed,’ and confessed, ‘I am not sure if the alliance is still intact.’

While he hoped the alliance could be ‘put together,’ Chidambaram’s comments come amidst speculation about cracks within the INDIA bloc.

BJP: A ‘Formidable’ Force

Chidambaram also lauded the BJP, calling it a ‘formidably organised’ political force. He warned that the opposition was fighting against a ‘formidable machinery,’ stating, ‘In my experience and my reading of history, there has been no political party so formidably organised as the BJP.’

He further claimed that the BJP controls various institutions, from the Election Commission to local police stations, asserting that this control extends ‘as much as can be allowed in a democracy.’

Looking Ahead to 2029

Chidambaram emphasized the importance of the 2029 general elections, stating that a decisive victory for the BJP would be detrimental to Indian democracy. He said, ‘If the 2029 elections take a decisive turn to strengthen the BJP, ‘we are beyond repair.’ He stressed that the 2029 elections are ‘critical’ and must ensure the return of ‘a full-fledged democracy.’

The Congress leader’s remarks have sparked debate about the future of the INDIA bloc and the upcoming elections.

BJP Responds

Responding to Chidambaram’s comments, BJP national spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari took a swipe at the Congress, saying that Rahul Gandhi’s close aides know the party has no future. Bhandari wrote on X, ‘Opposition will not be intact in future, BJP is a formidable organization’ Even Rahul Gandhi’s close aides know Congress has no future.’
