Sonu Nigam Avoids Forced Trip to Karnataka After Insult Controversy
Indian singer Sonu Nigam has been granted some relief by the Karnataka High Court, which has ordered that no coercive action be taken against him in a case related to alleged insults against Kannadigas. The court also ruled that Nigam will not be required to travel physically to Karnataka to record statements with the police, if needed.
Recording Statements Through Video Conferencing
Justice allowed Nigam to record his statement through video conferencing. The court further stated that if the police require Nigam’s physical presence for recording a statement, they can visit his residence instead. However, Nigam will be responsible for covering the expenses of the police visit to his home.
Singer’s Lawyer Argues for Convenience
This decision comes after Nigam’s lawyer, Advocate Dhananjay Vidyapati, requested the court to exempt the singer from appearing in person in Karnataka. Vidyapati argued that given Nigam’s celebrity status, he could submit his statement by post. He also expressed concern that a physical appearance would likely cause further commotion.
State’s Counsel Opposes the Request
The state’s counsel opposed this request, arguing that providing special treatment to Nigam would set a bad precedent. They assured the court that Nigam would be protected if he appeared in person.
Court Acknowledges Nigam’s Unique Position
The court ultimately sided with Nigam’s lawyer, recognizing that he is not an ordinary individual. While acknowledging that Nigam should have avoided making controversial remarks, the court granted him the requested relief to avoid a physical appearance in Karnataka.
Final Order Issued
The court issued a final order stating that Nigam can appear through video conferencing to record any necessary statements. If the investigating officer (IO) insists on a physical recording, Nigam will be responsible for covering the IO’s travel expenses to his location.
