Tit-for-Tat: Pakistan Expels Indian Diplomat

In a swift move mirroring India’s recent action, Pakistan has declared an Indian diplomat ‘persona non grata’ and ordered him to leave the country within 24 hours. The Pakistani Foreign Ministry accused the Indian High Commission staff member of engaging in activities deemed incompatible with his diplomatic status.

This comes after India declared a Pakistani diplomat ‘persona non grata’ earlier this week for similar alleged activities. Both countries have taken this strong diplomatic step in a tit-for-tat exchange.

The History

The current standoff escalates a period of heightened tension between India and Pakistan. This recent diplomatic clash follows a military conflict between the two nations after India conducted Operation Sindoor, targeting suspected terrorists in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in retaliation for the killing of 26 people in the Baisaran Valley of Pahalgam. While a ceasefire was agreed upon on May 10th, diplomatic relations remain strained.

Adding fuel to the fire, India had previously summoned Pakistan’s top diplomat in April after a terror attack in Pahalgam, handing over a formal ‘persona non grata’ notice to Pakistani military diplomats.

Understanding ‘Persona Non Grata’

The term ‘persona non grata’ originates from Latin and translates to “unwelcome person.” In diplomacy, it signifies a formal expulsion of a foreign official from a country, usually due to actions deemed unacceptable or hostile to the host nation’s interests.
