Trump to Accept Luxury Jet as Gift From Qatar

President Donald Trump has announced that he will accept a luxury jet as a gift from the Qatari royal family for his presidential library after his term ends. The Qatari Ministry of Defense plans to formally present the aircraft to the US Department of Defense next week during President Trump’s visit to Qatar.

A ‘Great Gesture’

Trump, speaking at an unrelated press conference, called the gift a “great gesture” and insisted it is not a personal gift but rather one for the Department of Defense. He stated that the plane will go directly to his presidential library and he wouldn’t be using it after he leaves office.

Transparency and Legality

Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasized the legal compliance and transparency surrounding the donation. She said the details are still being worked out, but any donation to the government will be conducted in full compliance with the law and with utmost transparency. Attorney General Pam Bondi reportedly sent a legal memo to the White House counsel office stating it would be “legally permissible” for Qatar to make the donation contingent on its transfer to Trump’s library before his term ends.

Air Force One Replacement

While the specifics of the aircraft remain undisclosed, it is believed to be a Boeing 747-8, a type of plane comparable to the current Air Force One. The Qatari official stated that the plane will undergo modifications by the Pentagon to meet Air Force One’s safety standards.

Timeline and Controversy

The plane’s eventual use by Trump as a private citizen after his presidency raises questions about potential ethical concerns. The modification process is expected to take several years, as an unnamed Defense Department official told The New York Times it would take years, not months, to secure a contract and complete the necessary upgrades.

Background

This situation comes amidst ongoing delays in the delivery of new Air Force One aircraft ordered from Boeing. Trump has previously expressed frustration with the delays and considered alternative options, including purchasing and refurbishing used jets.
