China Denies Sending Arms to Pakistan Amidst Rising Tensions

Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated last week following a terror attack in Pahalgam, India, that claimed the lives of 26 people. In response, India launched Operation Sindoor, carrying out a series of airstrikes deep inside Pakistan targeting nine terror camps. Amidst this heightened conflict, reports emerged claiming China sent its largest military cargo plane, the Y-20, carrying weapons to Pakistan.

China’s Response

The People’s Liberation Army Air Force vehemently denied these claims, calling them a “rumour” and threatening legal action against those spreading them. A statement on the Chinese defence ministry’s website asserted that no such mission took place, refuting the speculation circulating on various online platforms.

“The internet is not beyond the law! Those who produce and spread military-related rumours will be held legally responsible!” the statement warned.

China’s Stance on the Conflict

This denial comes after China previously rejected Pakistan’s claim that it used Chinese fighter jets in the conflict. Beijing has consistently emphasized its opposition to terrorism, urging both sides to prioritize peace and stability.

China’s Growing Arms Supply to Pakistan

Adding to the complexities, a recent report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) revealed that China has become Pakistan’s primary arms supplier, accounting for a staggering 81% of Islamabad’s total weapons imports between 2020 and 2024.

Ongoing Tensions

The situation remains volatile as India and Pakistan continue to engage in a military stand-off. The recent airstrikes, coupled with the allegations of Chinese involvement, have heightened regional tensions, raising concerns about a potential escalation of the conflict.
