ISRO Chief: 10 Satellites Guarding India’s Security in Tense Times

ISRO Chief Highlights Satellite Role Amid India-Pakistan Tensions
In the wake of heightened tensions between India and Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chief V Narayanan emphasized the vital role of satellites in ensuring national security.
Speaking at the 5th Convocation Ceremony of the Central Agricultural University (CAU) in Agartala on Sunday, Narayanan stated that 10 satellites are currently operating around the clock for strategic purposes. He stressed the importance of satellite technology for monitoring India’s extensive 7,000 km coastline and achieving numerous critical objectives.
Beyond Security: Satellites Serving the Nation in Various Sectors
Narayanan highlighted that ISRO’s satellites are instrumental in serving the public in various sectors, including agriculture, tele-education, telemedicine, television broadcasting, weather forecasting, environmental monitoring, food security, and disaster management. He noted that satellites have significantly improved disaster response, saving countless lives compared to previous decades.
India’s Growing Space Power
The ISRO chief underscored India’s leading position in the global space sector, claiming the top spot in nine areas. He cited the Chandrayaan-1 mission’s discovery of water molecules on the Moon’s surface as a testament to India’s pioneering achievements. He also mentioned that India has launched over 433 satellites for 34 countries, solidifying its position as a major player in space exploration.
Narayanan announced that India and the US will collaborate on building the world’s most advanced and expensive earth-imaging satellite. He emphasized that India, once lagging behind in satellite technology, has made remarkable progress in recent decades.
Looking Ahead: A Vision for India’s Space Future
Looking towards the future, Narayanan expressed confidence that India will become a leader in all fields and a significant contributor to global progress before its 100th anniversary of independence. He stressed the importance of advanced satellite technology for the betterment of citizens and highlighted ISRO’s role in supporting development in India’s northeastern states.
Narayanan also announced plans to offer 100 science students from each of the eight northeastern states the opportunity to visit the ISRO Centre in Bengaluru, fostering curiosity and awareness about space science and technology.
