Outrage as Indian Foreign Secretary and Daughter Face Online Harassment

India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and his daughter have become victims of a wave of online abuse and doxxing following India’s agreement with Pakistan to halt military actions. The situation has sparked outrage and condemnation on social media.

Trolls Target Diplomat and Family

Reports on Sunday revealed that a group of online users launched personal attacks against Misri, using derogatory terms like “Traitor,” “Gaddar,” and “Deshdrohi” to label him. The attacks even extended to Misri’s daughters, with some users questioning their citizenship and sharing personal information, including his daughter’s mobile number.

Twitter users like journalist Swati Chaturvedi and Mohammed Zubair, known for his fact-checking work, expressed their shock and concern over the harassment, highlighting the personal and dangerous nature of the abuse.

Calls for Respectful Discourse

While some users engaged in the online vitriol, others condemned the attacks, emphasizing the need for respectful discourse and demanding an end to the doxxing and harassment.

Background on India-Pakistan Tensions

The online abuse follows heightened tensions between India and Pakistan. On April 22, a terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, claimed the lives of 26 people, mostly tourists. India responded with a military operation, codenamed Operation Sindoor, leading to a tense standoff.

On May 8, Misri stated that Pakistan was responsible for escalating the situation, emphasizing that India’s actions were solely in response to the attack. He also announced the suspension of services at the Kartarpur Sahib corridor due to security concerns.
