From Theranos to Blood Test 2.0: Holmes’ Partner Takes a Chance on Diagnostics

Elizabeth Holmes, the disgraced founder of blood-testing company Theranos, is currently serving a prison sentence for defrauding investors. But her former partner, Billy Evans, isn’t letting that deter him from the world of diagnostics.
A Familiar Pitch
Evans, who shares two children with Holmes, is seeking funding for a new company promising a ‘radically new approach to health testing.’ The company’s marketing materials, reviewed by The New York Times, position it as ‘the future of diagnostics.’ Sound familiar? That’s because Theranos, under Holmes’ leadership, made similar claims about revolutionizing healthcare with a revolutionary blood-testing device.
Theranos famously promised to run a multitude of complex lab tests from just a finger prick. The company captured global attention, but its claims were ultimately exposed as false, leading to Holmes’ conviction.
Can Evans Avoid Theranos’ Fate?
Now, Evans is stepping onto the same stage, hoping to create a successful diagnostics company. Whether he can do so without repeating Theranos’ mistakes remains to be seen. The new venture certainly faces an uphill battle in convincing investors and the public to trust its promises.
