Rohit Sharma Steps Down, Leaving a Captaincy Void

The Indian cricket team is facing a leadership change after Rohit Sharma’s shock retirement from Test cricket. Sharma, who captained India in the longest format, announced his decision on Wednesday, stating his intention to focus on limited-overs cricket.

Finding a Successor: The Top Contenders

With a crucial five-match Test series against England looming in June, the Indian selectors are on the hunt for a new captain. Among the frontrunners are Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, and Rishabh Pant. Notably, Jasprit Bumrah, a seasoned leader who has captained India in several matches, is also in the mix.

MSK Prasad Backs Bumrah

Former selection committee chairman MSK Prasad believes Bumrah is the ideal candidate to succeed Sharma. He told India Today, “Why not, man? Why not? Since he’s fit now, why not?” Prasad highlighted Bumrah’s leadership qualities, stating that he’s done extremely well in the opportunities he’s had to captain.

Gill Needs a Strong Series

While Gill is also considered a strong contender, Prasad emphasized the need for consistency. He said, “I think Shubman needs one good series in England or New Zealand so he can focus on his batting.”

A Vice-Captain Option

Prasad even suggested a potential pairing of Bumrah as captain and Gill as his deputy, stating, “You can start with Bumrah and make Shubman vice-captain.” This would allow both players to contribute to the team’s success in different ways.

A Crucial Series Ahead

The upcoming England Test series is highly significant, marking the beginning of the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle. India will be looking to secure a strong start under their new captain and build momentum for the crucial tournament.
