Microsoft’s Brad Smith echoed these concerns, calling the U.S. electrical system “ancient—50 years old” and “ill-equipped” to handle the growing energy appetite of AI. He warned that without significant upgrades, the nation’s power grid could be overwhelmed by the demands of AI.

The urgency of the situation is undeniable. Experts estimate that by 2030, data centers could require an additional 96 gigawatts of power, a figure that threatens to consume nearly the entirety of the nation’s current energy generation.

OpenAI’s Sam Altman, who envisions building a “brain for the world,” acknowledges the significant infrastructure challenges associated with achieving this ambitious goal. He understands that AI’s success hinges on a reliable and massively scaled-up energy grid, a grid that current infrastructure cannot provide.

The viral video sparked a wave of online discussion, ranging from humorous musings about harnessing human energy to serious concerns about the potential for blackouts. The underlying message is clear: AI’s future is inextricably linked to the fate of America’s power grid.
