Air Raid Sirens Triggered in Chandigarh as India-Pakistan Conflict Escalates

Air Raid Sirens Sound in Chandigarh
Panic gripped Chandigarh on Friday morning (May 9, 2025) when air raid sirens blared across the city. The sirens went off around 9:30 am following an alert from the Air Force station indicating a possible aerial attack.
Precautionary Measures and Citywide Blackout
As a precautionary measure, residents were urged to stay indoors and avoid balconies. This followed a citywide blackout in Chandigarh on Thursday night (May 8, 2025) and similar blackouts in several districts of Punjab, including Pathankot, Amritsar, Jalandhar, Rupnagar, Fazilka, Ludhiana, Hoshiarpur, and Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar.
Drones Spotted and Neutralized
Adding to the tension, security forces in Jalandhar neutralized some drones that were spotted around 11:20 pm on Thursday. These developments come amidst escalating tensions between India and Pakistan.
Heightened Alert and School Closures
Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh remain on high alert following India’s actions against terrorism emanating from Pakistan. On Thursday, government officials in Punjab had canceled leave for police and health personnel, keeping them on standby.
The Punjab government has also ordered the closure of all government, private, and aided schools, colleges, and universities across the state for the next three days. Education Minister Harjot Bains announced this decision on Thursday night, citing the evolving situation.
