US Expresses Concern as India-Pakistan Tensions Flare
The United States is closely monitoring the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, urging both countries to de-escalate the situation. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with both Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, emphasizing the need for dialogue and restraint.
Rubio’s Diplomatic Efforts
Rubio highlighted the US commitment to peace and stability in the region, stressing the importance of Pakistani and Indian cooperation to ease the situation. He also expressed US support for direct communication between the two nations.
India Responds to Pakistan’s Actions
India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated that India’s actions have been measured and targeted, aimed at countering terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan. He emphasized that India’s response was a direct consequence of Pakistan’s initial escalation on April 22nd.
Misri clarified that India’s response has not targeted military installations or civilians, and any further actions by Pakistan would be met with a proportionate response.
Escalation on the Ground
Meanwhile, tensions have escalated on the ground. Pakistan targeted Jammu with loitering munitions, prompting Indian Air Defence guns to retaliate. Blackouts and sirens have been reported in several districts of Jammu, including Kishtwar, Akhnoor, and Jammu city.
