Civilians Killed in Cross-Border Shelling

At least 12 civilians, including three women and three children, tragically lost their lives in heavy mortar shelling and firing by Pakistani troops on Wednesday (May 7, 2025). Over 50 others were injured in the attacks, which targeted villages and infrastructure across four districts near the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir. The shelling also claimed the life of one Indian soldier in the Poonch sector, according to officials.

Second Day of Shelling and India’s Response

The Pakistani shelling continued into Thursday (May 8, 2025), marking the second consecutive day of attacks along the LoC in Kupwara district. India responded with its own military strikes, codenamed ‘Operation Sindoor’. In the wake of the escalating situation:

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with President Droupadi Murmu and held a Cabinet meeting to brief his colleagues on the military developments.

  • The government has also convened an all-party meeting in Parliament to inform all political parties about ‘Operation Sindoor’.

  • As a precautionary measure, at least 21 airports across India, primarily in northern and northwestern regions, have been closed to passenger flights until May 10th.

International Attention

India has also briefed envoys of 13 Security Council members about the situation, highlighting the cross-border aggression by Pakistan. The international community is closely monitoring the developments at the LoC.
