Rohit Sharma Retires From Test Cricket
Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma has officially hung up his Test boots, bringing an end to a remarkable journey in the longest format of the game. Sharma made the announcement on his Instagram story, expressing his gratitude for the opportunity to represent his country.
“Hello everyone, I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It’s been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format,” Sharma wrote.
A Career Filled with Highlights
Sharma’s Test career spanned 67 matches, during which he amassed 4,301 runs at an average of 40.57. He scored 12 centuries and 18 fifties, with his highest score being a magnificent 212 against South Africa in 2019.
His Test debut against the West Indies in 2013 was a memorable one, scoring 177 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. This innings set the tone for a career that saw him evolve from a middle-order batsman to one of India’s most reliable opening batsmen, especially in the World Test Championship (WTC) era.
The WTC Era: A Second Wind
The introduction of the WTC breathed new life into Rohit’s Test career. Promoted to open, he found consistent form, particularly at home. In 40 WTC matches, he scored 2,716 runs at an average of 41.15, with nine centuries and eight fifties. His highest score in the WTC cycle was also a memorable 212.
Overseas Struggles and a Resurgence in 2021-22
While Rohit’s performances at home were exceptional, he faced challenges in overseas conditions, particularly against the likes of South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia (SENA countries). However, he recorded a notable resurgence in the 2021-22 Pataudi Trophy in England, becoming India’s leading run-scorer with 368 runs at an average of 52.57.
Captaincy and the 2023 World Test Championship Final
Rohit led India in 24 Tests, winning 12, losing nine, and drawing three. He steered the team to the final of the 2023 World Test Championship in England, where they fell short against Australia.
A Legacy of Transformation and Class
Despite a dip in form and team results in his final years, Rohit Sharma’s Test career is a testament to his transformation, perseverance, and undeniable class. He leaves behind a legacy of impactful innings, memorable moments, and a mark on Indian cricket that will be remembered for years to come.
What’s Next?
Rohit will continue to represent India in the ODI format, bringing his wealth of experience and leadership to the team.
