Bumrah Captaincy Dream on Hold! 💔 इंग्लैंड में नही होंगे कप्तान
Jasprit Bumrah, India’s star bowler and vice captain, is unlikely to lead the Indian Test team on their tour of England starting June-end. This news comes from sources close to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Bumrah, who led India to victory in the single Test they won in Australia earlier this year, might not play in all five Tests against England. The BCCI selectors want a player who will be available for the entire series to be the vice-captain. They feel it’s important to have a consistent leadership duo throughout the tour.
“We want a player who will be there for all five Test matches and he should be given the vice-captain’s role. Bumrah won’t be playing all five matches, so we don’t want to appoint different deputies for different games. It will be better if the captain and vice-captain are certain and play all five Tests,” sources said.
Young Leader in the Making?
The selectors are also looking for a young player who could be groomed as a future leader. From the current team, Shubman Gill (25) and Rishabh Pant (27) are the top contenders. Other regulars, like Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, and K L Rahul, are in their 30s, while Yashasvi Jaiswal is considered too young at 23.
Bumrah’s Injury Concerns
Bumrah’s injury record is also a factor. He has been sidelined several times in the past due to back problems, forcing him to miss important tournaments like the Champions Trophy and the T20 World Cup. The BCCI wants to be cautious about risking his health.
“I would be very, very careful (with Bumrah). I would give him two Test matches at a time and then wait for the break,” former coach Ravi Shastri, who saw Bumrah flourish in Tests, has advised.
So, while Bumrah is undoubtedly a crucial part of the Indian team, he may have to take a backseat from the captaincy role for now.
