India Mourns the Loss of Former ISRO Chief K. Kasturirangan

A Life Dedicated to Science and Space Exploration

Dr. K. Kasturirangan, the renowned former chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), passed away in Bengaluru on April 25th at the age of 84. His contributions to India’s space program and scientific advancements have left an indelible mark on the nation.

Dr. Kasturirangan’s career spanned over four decades at ISRO. He played a pivotal role in several key missions, including serving as the project director for India’s first two experimental earth observation satellites, BHASKARA-I & II. He also spearheaded the launch of the first operational Indian Remote Sensing satellite, IRS-1A.

During his tenure as ISRO chairman from 1994 to 2003, Dr. Kasturirangan oversaw the successful launch and operation of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) and the first flight testing of the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV). These milestones propelled India into the ranks of global spacefaring nations.

His dedication to science and education extended beyond ISRO. Dr. Kasturirangan was a member of the Rajya Sabha and the Planning Commission. He chaired the drafting committee for the National Education Policy 2020 and headed the steering committee responsible for developing a new National Curriculum Framework. He was also known for his work on the Kasturirangan Committee report on the Western Ghats, which highlighted the ecological importance of this natural landscape.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, calling Dr. Kasturirangan “a towering figure in India’s scientific and educational journey.” He lauded Dr. Kasturirangan’s visionary leadership and selfless contributions to the nation, stating that his efforts in steering India’s space program to new heights would always be remembered.
