A Nation Mourns, Cricket Feels the Ripple

The recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, that took the lives of 26 people has sent shockwaves through India and the world. The incident, where terrorists from a Lashkar-e-Taiba offshoot targeted unsuspecting tourists, has been widely condemned, and the cricket world is no exception.

India and Pakistan haven’t played bilateral cricket series since 2012-13, with their matches primarily limited to ICC and continental tournaments. These clashes are always a huge draw, and fans often see them pitted against each other in the group stages of these events.

Speculation and Clarification

Following the attack, some reports claimed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had approached the International Cricket Council (ICC) to ensure India and Pakistan weren’t placed in the same group in future tournaments like the World Cup. However, Cricbuzz reported that these claims are unfounded, citing a BCCI official who said there’s no truth to the speculation.

ICC Events on the Horizon

With no major men’s ICC events this year, attention turns to the Women’s World Cup in India (September-October). Pakistan has qualified for the tournament, but will play their matches at a neutral venue as per prior agreements. The men’s Asia Cup, hosted by India, will also be held at a neutral venue.

BCCI’s Stance – A Balancing Act

The BCCI has been clear about its stance on playing Pakistan. While they are against bilateral series due to government restrictions, they participate in ICC events as they are obligated to do so. BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla emphasized this, stating, “We don’t play with Pakistan in bilaterals going forward. But when it comes to ICC event we play due to ICC engagement. ICC is also aware of whatever is happening they will do it.”

Solidarity in the Face of Tragedy

Secretary Devajit Saikia also expressed his condolences, saying, “The cricketing community is deeply shocked and anguished by the tragic loss of innocent lives in the gruesome terror attack at Pahalgam yesterday. On behalf of the BCCI, while condemning this ghastly and cowardly act with strongest possible words, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayers for the departed souls. In sharing their pain and grief, we stand hand in hand at this hour of tragedy.”
