Major Crackdown on Terror Network in Punjab

In a significant blow to terror activities, Punjab Police has arrested five individuals suspected of being part of a network linked to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). The arrests were announced by Punjab’s Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Those apprehended include Naresh Kumar alias Babbu, Abhinav Bhagat alias Abhi, Ajay Kumar alias Ajju, Sunny Kumar, and a minor whose identity is being withheld. According to DGP Yadav, these suspects were allegedly planning to attack police installations using grenades.

Dramatic Arrest and Injury

During a follow-up operation, one of the accused, Ajay Kumar, attempted to escape by seizing a police officer’s firearm and firing at the team. He sustained injuries during a brief exchange of fire and is currently receiving medical attention.

Connections to a Notorious Group

The suspects are believed to be affiliated with the Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), a terrorist group headquartered abroad and led by the notorious gangster Jiwan Fauji. The BKI is listed as a terrorist organization by India’s Ministry of Home Affairs.

Continuing Threat of Khalistan Movement

This arrest highlights the ongoing threat posed by groups seeking to revive the Khalistan movement, a separatist ideology aimed at creating an independent Sikh state in India. While the movement was largely suppressed in the 1990s, groups like the BKI continue to operate, receiving support from Pakistan and some overseas Sikh organizations, according to the South Asia Terrorism Portal (SATP).

Police Commitment to Safety and Security

DGP Yadav emphasized the Punjab Police’s unwavering commitment to dismantling terror networks and ensuring peace and security in the region.
