A Familiar Face Takes Charge

Deven Bharti, a seasoned police officer with a long and distinguished career, has been appointed as the new Mumbai Police Commissioner. The Maharashtra Government made the announcement, marking the end of Vivek Phansalkar’s three-year tenure.

Bharti, 56, has been a prominent figure in Mumbai’s law enforcement for years. He served as the Special Police Commissioner before stepping into his new role.

Known for his dedication and experience, Bharti has held several key positions, including Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) overseeing all police stations in Mumbai. He has also headed the Maharashtra State Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and served as Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch), demonstrating his expertise in tackling various serious crimes.

A Proven Track Record

Bharti’s career is marked by involvement in numerous high-profile investigations, including the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. This experience, coupled with his close relationship with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who even created a special police commissioner post for him in 2023, makes him a strong leader for the city’s police force.

His journey hasn’t been without its challenges. During the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, Bharti was transferred to a less prominent position within the Maharashtra State Security Corporation (MSSC). He was also involved in a controversy regarding an alleged FIR delay involving a BJP leader’s wife. However, the police investigation ultimately found no evidence to support the charges against him.
