India Revamps National Security Advisory Board After Pahalgam Terror Attack

India Strengthens National Security After Deadly Attack
In the wake of a devastating terrorist attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 26 civilians, the Indian government has taken significant steps to bolster its national security. A key move involves the revamp of the National Security Advisory Board (NSAB), a critical body providing strategic advice to the government on security matters.
New Leadership and Members
Alok Joshi, a former Chief of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), India’s external intelligence agency, has been appointed as the head of the NSAB. The board has also welcomed six new members, including retired military officers and officials from the Indian Police Service and Indian Foreign Service. These seasoned experts bring valuable experience and insights to the table as India grapples with the escalating threat of terrorism.
Response to Pahalgam Attack
The Pahalgam attack, which injured many others, has prompted a series of high-level meetings and discussions. Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened a Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting, along with meetings of the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA) and the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA). These meetings focused on security preparedness, the cross-border linkages of the attack, and potential responses.
Following the attack, the government announced several measures, including suspending the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan, a strong signal of its determination to address cross-border terrorism.
PM Modi’s Assurance to Armed Forces
In a meeting with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Anil Chauhan, and the three service chiefs, Prime Minister Modi expressed his unwavering confidence in the capabilities of the Indian Armed Forces. He emphasized that the armed forces have the operational freedom to determine the nature, targets, and timing of India’s response to terrorism.
