A horrifying fire ripped through the Rituraj Hotel in central Kolkata on Tuesday evening, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake. At least 14 people tragically lost their lives in the blaze, while several others were rescued from the burning building.

The Kolkata Police Commissioner, Manoj Kumar Verma, confirmed the grim toll, stating that 14 bodies had been recovered. Firefighters battled valiantly for hours, utilizing hydraulic ladders to reach those trapped on balconies. Six fire tenders were deployed to combat the intense flames.

While the fire has been extinguished, rescue operations continue as authorities search for any potential survivors. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with a special team formed to probe the incident.

Political Leaders React to the Tragedy

The incident drew swift reactions from political leaders across the state. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee personally inquired about the situation, urging Mayor Firhad Hakim to immediately visit the scene.

BJP leader and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar called for a stringent review of fire safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future. He emphasized the need for swift rescue operations and adequate medical and humanitarian aid for the victims.

Congress leader Subhankar Sarkar criticized the Kolkata Corporation, alleging a lack of safety and security measures at the hotel. He questioned the corporation’s response to the fire and expressed concern for those still trapped.

This devastating fire serves as a stark reminder of the importance of robust fire safety protocols and the need for swift and effective emergency response.
