India Eyes Airspace Closure to Pakistan Amid Rising Tensions

Rising Tensions Lead to Possible Airspace Ban
India is seriously considering closing its airspace to Pakistani airlines, a move that could significantly impact air travel between the two countries and beyond. This comes amidst escalating tensions following a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, India, on April 22nd.
Sources familiar with the situation say that if implemented, this ban would force Pakistani carriers to reroute their flights over China or Sri Lanka to reach destinations in Southeast Asia, like Kuala Lumpur. This would add significant time and cost to these journeys.
Not Just Airspace: India Taking Further Action
India isn’t stopping at just airspace restrictions. They’re also contemplating banning Pakistani ships from using Indian ports. These actions follow a series of measures already taken by India, including suspending the Indus Water Treaty and revoking visas for Pakistani citizens.
Pakistan’s Response and Global Reaction
Pakistan closed its airspace to Indian airlines earlier in response to India’s actions after the Pahalgam attack. India maintains that two of the three terrorists involved in the attack were Pakistani, while Pakistan denies any involvement. China has urged both sides to exercise restraint.
Impact on PIA
State-owned Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) heavily relies on Indian airspace for its flights to Southeast Asian destinations like Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and Thailand. Closing Indian airspace would deal a major blow to PIA, forcing them to take longer routes, potentially affecting their financial health. PIA was previously banned from operating in Europe by the European Air Safety Agency due to safety concerns, a ban that was only lifted in late 2024.
Historical Context
This isn’t the first time India has closed its airspace to Pakistani airlines. During the 1971 war, PIA rerouted its flights over Sri Lanka. The current situation echoes those historical tensions, highlighting the deep complexities and ongoing challenges in the relationship between India and Pakistan.
Diplomatic Fallout
Beyond airspace and port restrictions, India has also taken a series of diplomatic actions, including suspending the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme for Pakistani nationals, declaring Pakistani defense advisors persona non grata, and reducing staff at both countries’ high commissions.
