Kashmir Tensions Flare: India and Pakistan Exchange Fire After Deadly Tourist Attack

Tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated dramatically following a horrific attack on tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir last week. The two nuclear-armed neighbors have exchanged gunfire for four consecutive nights, raising fears of a wider conflict.

Deadly Attack Sparks Outrage

The violence erupted after gunmen killed 26 people near the popular resort town of Pahalgam last Tuesday. This was the deadliest attack on civilians in Indian-administered Kashmir in 25 years. Survivors described a chilling scene where the gunmen separated men, questioned them, and targeted Hindus before shooting them at close range.

The attack sparked outrage and grief in India, with the government accusing Pakistan of funding and encouraging “cross-border terrorism” in Kashmir. Pakistan has denied any involvement and called for a neutral investigation.

Military Escalation and Retaliatory Measures

Following the attack, India launched a massive security operation, detaining hundreds of people and searching thousands of homes and forests in a bid to hunt down the attackers. Two of the three suspected gunmen have been identified as Pakistani nationals.

In response to the attack, both countries have taken a series of retaliatory measures. India has suspended the vital Indus Waters Treaty, which governs water sharing between the two nations, and sealed its land border with Pakistan. Pakistan has closed its airspace to Indian airlines.

India’s defense forces have also conducted several military exercises across the country, some of which are routine drills, but the heightened tensions are raising concerns.

Denials and Unresolved Tensions

A group known as Kashmir Resistance, also called The Resistance Front, has denied any involvement in the attack, claiming that an earlier message taking responsibility was the result of a cyberattack. They suggested it may have been the work of Indian intelligence.

The situation remains tense and volatile, with no clear resolution in sight. The exchange of fire underscores the deep-seated mistrust and ongoing conflict between India and Pakistan over the disputed territory of Kashmir.
