Nawaz Sharif Advises Against Aggression

In a time of heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has urged his younger brother and current Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to prioritize diplomacy over military action. This advice comes following the deadly Pahalgam attack, where terrorists linked to Pakistan killed 26 people.

According to a report by the Express Tribune, Nawaz believes Pakistan should utilize all available diplomatic channels to de-escalate the situation with India and avoid taking aggressive stances. This message is particularly significant considering Pakistan’s vow to retaliate with equal force to any Indian military action, raising fears of a potential war between the two nuclear-armed nations.

Tensions Soar After Pahalgam Attack

The Pahalgam attack, which India blames on Pakistan-backed terrorists, has further strained relations between the two countries. India is expected to respond militarily, which Pakistan has vowed to counter with a similar force. Adding to the concern, India recently suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, a crucial agreement governing the sharing of water resources, calling it an “act of war” by Pakistan. As a result, Pakistan has suspended all bilateral agreements with India, including the 1972 Simla Agreement, which aimed to establish a framework for peaceful relations.

The situation has been further inflamed by inflammatory statements from leading politicians on both sides. Federal minister Hanif Abbasi stated that Pakistan has 130 nuclear missiles aimed at India and ready to be launched. Similarly, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, a former foreign minister and Shehbaz Sharif’s coalition partner, threatened that either Pakistan’s water would flow in the Indus River or India’s blood.

Nawaz Sharif’s History of Peace Advocacy

This isn’t the first time Nawaz Sharif has called for peace with India. In 2018, he questioned Pakistan’s tolerance of “non-state actors” who cross the border and carry out attacks like the Mumbai terror attacks. His remarks at the time sparked a sedition case against him.

Now, with tensions escalating once again, Nawaz Sharif’s plea for diplomacy offers a glimmer of hope in a situation fraught with danger.
