Kevin Pietersen Wants KL Rahul Back in India’s T20 Squad

KL Rahul’s Batting Revamp Impresses Kevin Pietersen
Kevin Pietersen, mentor for the Delhi Capitals, is a big fan of KL Rahul’s new approach to batting in the IPL 2023. Pietersen believes Rahul deserves a spot back in India’s T20 squad and thinks he’d be a valuable asset batting at number four.
Pietersen praised Rahul’s shift in mindset, saying, ‘The way that KL Rahul is playing cricket now, he would be my first choice to bat at four and keep wicket for India.’
Earlier this season, Rahul himself acknowledged the need to return to his more aggressive, free-flowing style of batting. He said, ‘Somewhere along the way I lost that fun of hitting boundaries and hitting sixes. Now I have realised I need to go back… cricket’s changed, and T20 cricket, especially, is only about hitting boundaries.’
Rahul’s Journey and Evolution
Rahul’s IPL career has been marked by both explosive performances and periods where his strike rate dipped. He’s had success with various franchises, including Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings, and Lucknow Super Giants. However, his captaincy duties sometimes impacted his scoring rate.
Rahul also faced criticism for his performance in the 2022 T20 World Cup, where he struggled to maintain a high strike rate. But with Delhi Capitals this season, he seems to be back on track, playing with freedom and confidence.
Pietersen highlighted Rahul’s ability to adapt and evolve as a player. He said, ‘KL has been playing in a very positive manner since late last year… It’s very, very difficult [to change your style] So the way that he has accepted that he’s needed to change, the way that he has changed is of great, great credit to the person that he is.’
The Next Generation of Batters
Pietersen also touched on the exciting, yet unpredictable, style of the new generation of cricketers. He acknowledged that their approach might not always be suitable for Test cricket, but praised their ability to adapt to different conditions and game situations.
He emphasized the importance of technique and methodical play in specific conditions, highlighting how players like Virat Kohli and KL Rahul excel in those situations due to their strong foundations.
