A London Protest Takes a Dangerous Turn

Videos circulating online show Colonel Taimur Rahat, a high-ranking Pakistani military official, making a disturbing gesture during a protest outside the Pakistan High Commission in London. The colonel, who acts as the Pakistan Army and Air Advisor at the High Commission, was seen standing behind police barricades, staring at a group of protesters who were condemning the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, India. He drew his hand across his throat, a gesture widely interpreted as a death threat.

More than Just a Gesture

The incident has sparked outrage, particularly due to the context. The protesters, made up of members of the Indian and Jewish communities, were gathering to mourn the 26 civilians killed in the Pahalgam attack, including a Nepali national. They held Indian flags, displayed signs denouncing Pakistan’s alleged support for terrorist groups, and chanted for justice.

Adding Insult to Injury

The protesters also accused officials inside the Pakistan High Commission of playing loud, celebratory music during their demonstration. The organizers of the protest called this “a tone-deaf and disgraceful act” that “added deep insult to an already grievous injury.” They described the actions as a “shocking lack of empathy and human decency.”

Calls for Action

This incident has escalated tensions between India and Pakistan. Protesters are demanding that the British government summon the Pakistani High Commissioner and demand an explanation. They are also urging the UK to pressure Pakistan to condemn the Pahalgam attack and sever ties with militant groups operating in the region.

The Fallout Continues

The situation is further complicated by recent statements from Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, who threatened India over the Indus Waters Treaty, a water-sharing agreement between the two countries. He said, “Either our water flows in this Indus, or it will be their blood.”

India Responds Firmly

In response to both the London incident and Bhutto-Zardari’s statement, India has taken strong action. They have closed the Attari Integrated Check Post, suspended the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Visa Exemption Scheme for Pakistanis, and ordered Pakistani diplomatic staff to return home within 40 hours. India has also announced plans to reduce the number of diplomatic personnel in both countries’ High Commissions. Perhaps most significantly, India has halted the implementation of the Indus Waters Treaty, a move experts say could have a major impact on the security of the region.
