Jaishankar Meets with UK Counterpart to Discuss Pahalgam Terror Attack

India Pushes for International Condemnation of Pahalgam Attack
India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met with his UK counterpart, David Lammy, on Sunday to discuss the recent cross-border terrorist attack in Pahalgam. Jaishankar emphasized the need for a zero-tolerance approach towards terrorism in the talks. This meeting is part of India’s ongoing efforts to bring international attention to Pakistan’s role in the attack.
Jaishankar’s focus on diplomacy comes as tensions rise between India and Pakistan. He chose to remain in India instead of attending the BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting in Brazil, prioritizing the situation with Pakistan. The situation also casts uncertainty on upcoming foreign trips by other key Indian officials, including National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
Doval is unlikely to travel to Brazil for a BRICS security meeting later this week. Singh’s planned participation in the Russian Victory Day parade in Moscow on May 9 depends on how the India-Pakistan situation unfolds in the coming days.
International Response to Pahalgam
So far, India has received messages of condemnation and support from nearly 140 countries, with 16 world leaders personally expressing their condolences to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This includes condemnation from countries like China.
Lammy’s meeting with Jaishankar followed his own strong condemnation of the attack, stating he was “appalled by the horrific and cowardly terrorist attack on Kashmir.”
