A Question of Priorities: Should IPL Profits Fund Research?

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a massive, multi-billion dollar sporting spectacle. While fans revel in the thrill of the game, a Bengaluru professor is asking a thought-provoking question: what if a portion of that wealth was redirected towards building India’s future?

Professor Mayank Shrivastava from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) argues that a modest 40% tax on the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)’s IPL profits could generate a significant amount of money. He estimates that this could amount to nearly ₹15,000 crores over three years—enough to fund 10 new Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) or create a national fund for deep-tech innovation.

Shrivastava points out that including franchise profits, the total amount raised could be even higher, reaching nearly ₹6,000 crores annually. He highlights the irony that while entertainment is heavily subsidized, research institutions face taxes on essential equipment and consumables.

A Pattern Across Industries?

Shrivastava’s concerns extend beyond cricket. He argues that even modest taxation across booming sectors like Bollywood and religious trusts, which enjoy significant tax exemptions, could contribute significantly to scientific and technological development.

He believes that India’s focus on quick-return businesses is hindering long-term investments in research and innovation. “India doesn’t lack money. Indians don’t lack money. What we lack is the vision to invest in the future,” he asserts.

Shrivastava concludes with a powerful call to action: “Entertainment keeps the present alive. Research builds the future. It’s time India starts rewarding not just quick fame, but future builders.”
