Tensions between India and Pakistan have been on the rise, and recently, reports have surfaced suggesting that China sent its advanced PL-15 air-to-air missiles to Pakistan.

These missiles, showcased last year at the Zhuhai air show, are seen as China’s answer to the US AIM-120D AMRAAM. They boast a longer range of 200-300 km compared to the AIM-120D and can reach speeds exceeding Mach 5.

The concern is that these missiles, if deployed on Pakistan’s JF-17 fighter jets, could give them a tactical advantage over India’s air force.

While official sources haven’t confirmed the report, it aligns with the growing defense partnership between China and Pakistan. This move also highlights China’s ability to quickly produce and deliver crucial weapons to its allies when needed.

The PL-15 is a powerful weapon, with an active radar guidance system, a dual-pulse solid-propellant rocket motor, and an AESA radar for precise targeting and mid-course corrections. It’s designed to engage enemy aircraft at long distances, posing a potential threat to India’s air superiority.

Adding to the complexity, Russia’s R-37M long-range air-to-air missile, with a range of 300-400 km and hypersonic speeds, is also in the picture.

India is considering acquiring these missiles and integrating them with its existing Su-30MKI fighter jets.

However, experts believe that India should focus on developing its own indigenous Astra series of BVR missiles, particularly the Astra Mk-III, which is set to have an even longer range.

The situation highlights the escalating arms race in the region and raises concerns about the potential for conflict. India is actively seeking ways to counter the growing threat from China and Pakistan’s advanced weaponry while also pursuing its own indigenous defense capabilities.
