Ponting’s Aussie Favourites Spark Controversy as Punjab Kings’ Title Hopes Face Ominous Warning

The IPL 2025 season is turning out to be a real underdog story! While the usual giants were expected to dominate, some surprise teams have been making waves, with Punjab Kings (PBKS) being one of them. They’re currently sitting pretty in the top four after 44 games, but former cricketer Manoj Tiwary isn’t so sure about their chances. He thinks PBKS might not win the coveted trophy this time around.
Tiwary’s concerns stem from PBKS’ recent match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The game ended in a no-result due to rain, but it was what happened on the field that caught Tiwary’s eye. He was critical of head coach Ricky Ponting’s decision to favor Australian players, especially struggling Glenn Maxwell, over some in-form Indian batsmen.
When Prabhsimran Singh got out after a brilliant 83 runs, Tiwary expected Nehal Wadhera to come in at number four. Wadhera has shown his skills in this position for both Punjab and Mumbai Indians last season. But instead, Ponting opted for Maxwell, who unfortunately continued his poor form, getting out for a measly seven runs.
Tiwary also felt that Shashank Singh, a reliable finisher, would have been a better choice than Marco Jansen at number five.
Watching Ponting seemingly put his faith in Aussie players over the Indian talent, Tiwary expressed his worries. He tweeted that if Ponting keeps sticking to this strategy, PBKS will miss out on the IPL trophy this season. He believes that by overlooking the potential of Indian players, Ponting is undermining their chances.
Where does this leave PBKS?
Despite the rain-interrupted match, PBKS remained in fourth place on the points table. They have five wins and three losses after nine games. Their next challenge is against Chennai Super Kings on April 30th at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, followed by a home game against Lucknow Super Giants on May 4th in Dharamsala.
Will Ponting adjust his approach, or will Tiwary’s ominous prediction come true? The IPL season is still young, and anything can happen!
