Supreme Court to Regain Full Strength with New Judges
Chief Justice of India B R Gavai will administer the oath of office to three new judges of the Supreme Court today, May 30. The swearing-in ceremony marks a significant development as the apex court regains its full working strength of 34 judges, including the Chief Justice of India.
Meet the Three New Supreme Court Judges
The three new judges are Karnataka High Court Chief Justice NV Anjaria, Gauhati High Court Chief Justice Vijay Bishnoi, and Bombay High Court judge Justice AS Chandurkar. They were appointed to the top court on Thursday, filling existing vacancies.
Background and Careers of the New Judges
Justice NV Anjaria
Justice NV Anjaria, born on March 23, 1965, in Ahmedabad, comes from a family of lawyers. His father was also in the judiciary. Before taking oath as the chief justice of Karnataka High Court on February 25, 2024, he practiced law in the Gujarat High Court, handling constitutional issues and civil cases.

- LL.B from Sir LA Shah Law College in 1988
- Masters Degree in Law in 1989 from University School of Law, Ahmedabad
Justice Vijay Bishnoi
Born on March 26, 1964, in Jodhpur, Justice Bishnoi was enrolled as an advocate on July 8, 1989. He practiced law at the Rajasthan High Court and the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) at Jodhpur. He took oath as the chief justice of the Gauhati High Court on February 5, 2024.

Justice AS Chandurkar
Justice AS Chandurkar, born on April 7, 1965, completed his schooling at St Vincent’s High School, Pune. He graduated from Ness Wadia College, Pune, and ILS Law College, Pune. He joined the Bar on July 21, 1988, and began practice in Mumbai.

Impact and Future Developments
With the swearing-in of these three new judges, the Supreme Court will regain its full strength. However, with Supreme Court judge Justice Bela M Trivedi set to superannuate on June 9, one vacancy will soon arise. The Union Law Minister announced their appointment on May 29, following the recommendation by the apex court collegium headed by the CJI.
The addition of these experienced judges is expected to bring significant expertise to the bench, impacting the court’s ability to address its backlog of cases and provide authoritative rulings on critical issues affecting the nation.
