India’s newly appointed Test captain, Shubman Gill, is facing a setback as he’s set to miss the crucial warm-up match against England Lions.

IPL Playoffs Clash with Test Preparations

Gill was supposed to join the India A squad for the second unofficial Test against England Lions starting June 6th. However, his IPL commitments with the Gujarat Titans, who have qualified for the playoffs, have thrown a wrench in his England tour preparations. The IPL 2025 final is scheduled for June 3rd, and the BCCI wants to ensure Gill doesn’t rush into a warm-up match before taking on the captaincy role.

The board originally planned for Gill to play in this warm-up match to help him acclimate to the English conditions before the Test series, but head coach Gautam Gambhir has decided to give him a much-needed break after a grueling IPL season.

Rest and Intra-Squad Warm-Up

Thankfully, Gill will still get valuable practice time. He’s scheduled to participate in an intra-squad warm-up game starting on June 13th, giving him a chance to fine-tune his skills before the Test series begins on June 20th in Leeds.

The Indian team management clearly prioritizes Gill’s well-being and wants him to be fully prepared for the challenging Test series against England.

The Test Series Schedule

Here’s a look at the Test series schedule:

  • First Test: June 20 – June 24, Leeds
  • Second Test: July 2 – July 6, Edgbaston
  • Third Test: July 10 – July 14, Lord’s
  • Fourth Test: July 23 – July 27, Old Trafford
  • Fifth Test: July 31 – August 4, The Oval

The stakes are high for India, and having a rested and focused Gill at the helm will be crucial to their success.
